I Fought The Law (By Olivia Locher)

Many laws still in existence throughout the United States are wildly outdated, rendering them completely ridiculous, useless and bizarre. The absurdity is illustrated by New York-based photographer Olivia Locher, who catalogs the crazy rules and regulations of each state in a playful photographic series ‘I fought the law’. Take a look at the ongoing series below to find out more about the peculiar oddities present in the American legal system.

You might be surprised to learn that: In Alabama it is illegal to have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at all times. In Maine it’s unlawful to tickle women under the chin with a feather duster. In Oregon one may not test their physical endurance while driving a car on the highway. In Rhode Island, it is illegal to wear transparent clothing. In Utah no one may walk down the street carrying a paper bag containing a violin. It’s illegal to serve wine in teacups in KansasArizona residents may not have more than two dildos in a house. Nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool in CaliforniaIn Wisconsin it is illegal to serve apple pie in public restaurants without cheese. In Hawaii coins are not allowed to be placed in ones ears.

Teen Who Killed Four People Got Off On Probation Because He’s Rich | Gawker
A 16-year-old boy who drunkenly killed four people got probation this week because the judge — with no apparent irony — agreed with the boy’s defense that he was a victim of “affluenza,” whose parents taught him wealth and privilege shield consequences. The teen had faced up to twenty years in prison.
Sixteen-year-old Ethan Couch admitted to four counts of manslaughter after he and seven other boys stole alcohol from Walmart, piled into his car and struck and killed four pedestrianswhile going 70 miles per hour in a 40 zone. One of his passengers remains in the hospital with severe brain damage, and nine other bystanders were also injured.
Couch’s BAC was a .24 and he also had Valium in his system. According to reports, he was belligerent at the scene, at one point saying, “I’m outta here.” Prosecutors were hoping to get up to 20 years.
Couch’s defense was that he was a victim of his parents’ wealth and privilege; in that he never had to face consequences, which an expert summarized prior to sentencing.

He said Couch got whatever he wanted. As an example, Miller said Couch’s parents gave no punishment after police ticketed the then-15-year-old when he was found in a parked pickup with a passed out, undressed 14-year-old girl.
Miller also pointed out that Couch was allowed to drive at 13. He said the teen was emotionally flat and needed years of therapy. At the time of the fatal wreck, Couch had a blood alcohol content of .24, said Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson. It is illegal for a minor to drive with any amount of alcohol in his or her system.

The victims’ families sort of agree with the reasoning, in that they too feel that Couch’s privilege helped him avoid consequences.
Couch is now being sent to a $500,000-a-year counseling center. There are apparently five civil wrongful death suits pending against him totaling tens of millions of dollars.

An Israeli academic has claimed that raping wives and mothers of Palestinian Hamas militants is the only thing that could deter further terrorist attacks.
The remarks by renowned Middle East scholar Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan University were made three weeks ago after the grim discovery of the bodies of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers, but the recording was published online (in Hebrew) on Monday.
"The only thing that could deter a suicide bomber is knowing that if caught, his sister or his mother would be raped," said Kedar on Israel Radio Bet.
"It sounds very bad, but that’s the Middle East," he continued. "You have to understand the culture in which we live. The only thing that deters [Hamas leaders] is a threat to the connection between their heads and their shoulders."
To the shocked radio presenter who said that “we cannot take such steps, of course”, Kedar replied:
"I’m not talking about what we should or shouldn’t do. I’m talking about the facts. The only thing that deters a suicide bomber is the knowledge that if he pulls the trigger or blows himself up, his sister will be raped. That’s all. That’s the only thing that will bring him back home, in order to preserve his sister’s honor."
Kedar served for 25 years in the military intelligence, where he specialised in Islamic groups. He is currently a researcher at the right-wing Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar Ilan but previously worked for a shadowy organisation, the Israel Academia Monitor, which fights left-leaning academic professors.

At which point do you say ‘enough is enough’ and speak out against your hard earned tax dollars being sent to/your leaders supporting this country?
Ethnic cleansing, targeting civilians, ambulances, hospitals, harvesting organs of dead Palestinians without consent, forced sterilisation of Ethiopians, land grab, apartheid wall, illegal settlements, and now incitement to rape - is it time to wake up, world?

WHAT THE FUCK???????

I follow @KristyT on Twitter and she let me know about a project that she created with @tiffani (#DetroitWater) to help Detroit residents with their water costs. Their website is detroitwaterproject.org and there you can confidentially donate to cover a person’s bill.
Detroit has the highest percentage of Black residents compared to any other major U.S. city, and as I wrote about in Black In The 99%, race is most certainly forever intertwined with class and poverty; these cannot be extracted from each other, especially in a country where its very financial system and imperialistic power would not exist without enslavement and genocide. There is no way to extract the economic violence being committed upon Detroit residents from racial histories.
According to RH Reality Check, "in Detroit, the cost of water is nearly twice the national average, and approximately half of the city’s customers owe outstanding balances on their water bills. But let’s situate this against a broader historical and sociopolitical backdrop. By 2011, half of Detroit’s working-age population was unemployed, and only 27 percent had full-time work. Nearly one in five Detroit residents were below the poverty line. Approximately three in five children were living in households headed by single mothers (see Rose Brewer’s article on the prison industrial complex). Moreover, these statistics are significantly worse for the city’s Black and Latino residents.”
People simply cannot go without water and while this entire situation is larger than just “unpaid bills” but are acts of violence against these residents amidst larger economic and racial disenfranchisement, with the recent 15 day suspension on the human-made drought, hopefully no other excuses can be used to harm these people if they’re able to pay the bills. This isn’t about lack of “personal responsibility” creating negligence over a “luxury” but about systemic poverty, capitalism, privatization and WATER.
Again, if you want to support Detroit residents through a confidential donation via this fundraiser created by two thoughtful Black women, visit: detroitwaterproject.org.
